IMEI Checks: Why Skipping Them Is a $10,000 Mistake

One stolen iPhone accepted at your kiosk can cost you $800–1,200. A batch of carrier-locked devices accepted as unlocked can wipe out a week of margin. IMEI checks are the simplest, cheapest risk control in your operation — and the one most commonly skipped until it's too late.

What an IMEI Check Catches

  • Stolen/reported devices: Cross-referenced against carrier and law enforcement databases. Accepting one can expose you to property crime liability.
  • Carrier lock status: A locked device sells for 20–40% less than an unlocked one. Overpaying for a locked device is a real and common mistake.
  • Activation lock (iCloud/Google): A device with activation lock enabled is essentially unusable by a new owner — and nearly worthless to resell.
  • Blacklist status: Globally blacklisted devices can't be activated on most networks worldwide. These have parts-only value at best.

What an IMEI Check Doesn't Catch

IMEI databases are not perfect or instant. A device stolen in the last 24–48 hours may not be in the blacklist yet. A check clearing doesn't guarantee the device is legitimate — it just means it's not flagged yet. Pair IMEI checks with your own visual and behavioral signals (hesitant seller, no accessories, unusual urgency).

Building the Check Into Your Workflow

The check should be a non-negotiable step before any offer is presented — not something you do after you've told the customer what you'll pay. If the check fails, the transaction stops. Period. Build this into your software so staff can't skip it.

Policy recommendation

Post a visible notice at your kiosk that all devices are checked against stolen-device databases. This deters fraudulent sellers before they approach your counter and protects you legally.

IMEI Checks in Bulk and B2B

If you're buying devices in bulk from another business (corporate buyback, school districts, etc.), run IMEI checks on a sample before purchase and on 100% of devices before you pay. Batch IMEI check APIs make this fast — don't skip it on bulk buys just because you trust the seller.

R3UP runs IMEI checks instantly at point of purchase — carrier lock, blacklist, and activation lock status in one step.
